Christian Ethos

Great Walstead is a school which was founded with a clear Christian Ethos and vision. We are proud of our heritage and strive to embolden and encourage children to ask, seek and find their answers to “Life’s Big Questions.” We welcome pupils of all faiths and none.

With this in mind, our Chapel is central to school life and, as such, there are opportunities throughout the week for us to meet as a whole school, or within Year groups, Sections or Houses. Chapel offers a time for both personal and corporate reflection, as well as for developing an appreciation and understanding of the Christian faith through word and song. We believe that the spiritual component of education is vital in the development of the whole person and so there are other creative opportunities for collective worship.

As well as our weekly Chapels, we also provide opportunities for children to explore their views and feelings through Prayer Spaces, Revelation (a Christian Union), as well as in more formal End of Term Services, Carol Services and Harvest Festivals, where speakers from local churches or other Christian organisations are frequently invited to share a message.

In a world where religion and its practices have often been discredited or misunderstood, we believe in the importance of religious literacy and we offer pupils opportunities to study and explore great faith traditions of the world in order to broaden understanding and encourage respect.
